WE ARE OPEN

WELCOME TO
THE LITTLE HAPPY TOOTH CO

A friendly children’s dental practice devoted exclusively to caring for the smiles of children, adolescents and those with special needs.

WHAT IS A CHILDREN'S DENTIST?

Paediatric dentistry is a specialty of dentistry that focuses on the oral health and unique needs of young people. Our dental team is made up of highly experienced and qualified staff, sharing a passion for good oral health and a love for working with children.  We are dedicated to providing a high quality of dental care for all children. We focus strongly on preventative dentistry, providing educational advice and dental awareness. We believe that starting regular dental visits at a young age is imperative for forming good dental habits that will see your child through to adult hood.

CHILD DENTAL BENEFITS SCHEDULE

We are excited to announce our participation in the Child Dental Benefits Scheme, which provides eligible children with $1132 over 2 years. The scheme that is being federally funded allows families to afford best possible dental treatment, without the financial stress.

Letters are sent to eligible families regarding children who can claim dental benefits or alternatively families can enquire with Medicare Australia.

FIRST VISIT

The Australian Dental Association recommends that children start seeing the dentist before their first birthday or when they get their first tooth - whatever comes first.

At the first appointment, the dentist will gather helpful information about your child. Discussions can include questions about your child's general health and development, diet, behaviours and oral hygiene. The dentist will have a look at your child's mouth, inside and out and share information and tips to help you care for your child's teeth and tell you what to look out for as your child continues to grow.

Depending on how old your child is at their first visit the dentist may take x-rays to complete the check up. If treatment is required, the dentist will discuss various options and provide you with a treatment plan and a quote.

Creating a ‘dental home’ and building a relationship with a dentist early on can help your child to be comfortable at the dentist. It can help them to create a trusting relationship with their dentist.

TIPS TO PREPARE FOR A DENTAL VISIT

Below are some tips to help get your child ready for their first dental visit and future visits also.

  • Talk about what happens at the dentist.

  • Play dentist at home where you and your child can take turns as the patient and dentist.

  • Practice counting your child’s teeth at home. A spoon can make a great pretend dental mirror.

  • Read positive dental story books.

  • Watch a cartoon where your child’s favourite character visits the dentist. These can be easily found on YouTube.

  • Keep a positive attitude about going to the dentist.

  • Avoid negative or scary stories.

  • Do not use the dentist as a threat.

  • Even if you are nervous or anxious about going to the dentist, try not to show your feelings as children can pick up on it.

  • Do not tell your child to be brave. This can make them think that there is something to be fearful of.

The Australian Dental Association has written a great storybook that you can read to your child about caring for their teeth and mouth. The story is called Guardians of the Gums. Buy the hardcopy or read the e-book for free.
